Marine Corps PFT & CFT Standards: Full Scoring Tables

The Marine Corps Physical Fitness Text (PFT) measures pull-ups or push-ups, a plank hold, and a 3-mile run, scored out of 300 points across eight age brackets for men and women. A total of 150+ points (with at least 40 per event) earns a passing score, 200+ is 2nd Class, and 235+ is 1st Class. The Marine Corps Combat Fitness Test (CFT) adds movement to contact, ammo can lifts, and maneuver under fire.

If you're training for a Marine Corps fitness test, guesswork isn't good enough. The scoring tables are specific, the age brackets matter, and a single missed threshold in one event can sink your total score even if everything else looks solid. This guide breaks down the full Marine Corps PFT and Marine Corps CFT scoring tables by age and gender, explains how the three class thresholds work, and covers the body composition standards that run alongside — but separately from — your fitness test score.

Everything below is drawn from MCO 6100.13A (with Change 4, the current plank-based table) that reproduce the official tables. Scores of record always come from MCTIMS and your command, so treat this as a training reference, not your official record.

Last verified: October 20, 2026. Standards can change with new MARADMINs, so confirm current numbers against fitness.marines.mil before you test.

What events make up the Marine Corps PFT and Marine Corps CFT?

The Marine Corps PFT consists of three events, each worth up to 100 points (the push-up option caps at 70):

  • Pull-ups (dead-hang) or push-ups (2 minutes): Marines choose one. Pull-ups max out at 100 points; push-ups max out at 70 points, which caps a push-up-based PFT at 270 total points.
  • Plank: Replaced the abdominal crunch, which was discontinued on December 31, 2022. The plank is scored identically regardless of age or gender — a 3:45 hold earns 100 points, and a 1:10 hold earns the 40-point minimum.
  • 3-mile run: Scored by age and gender. Marines aged 46 and older may substitute a 5,000-meter row.

The PFT testing window runs January 1 through June 30. Recruits will have to take and pass the PFT in boot camp and meet other requirements. It is general knowledge that Marine physical training requirements are tougher than Army and Navy fitness tests.

The Marine Corps CFT, tested July 1 through December 31, swaps in three combat-oriented events:

  • Movement to Contact: An 880-yard run performed in utilities and boots.
  • Ammunition Lifts: Max reps of a 30-pound ammo can lifted overhead in 2 minutes.
  • Maneuver Under Fire (MANUF): A roughly 300-yard course combining high and low crawls, a buddy drag, a fireman's carry, an ammo can carry, push-ups, and a grenade throw.

Both tests use the same overall scoring logic: 300 points possible, a 40-point minimum per event (60 points for women's pull-ups), and a 150-point floor to pass.

How are Marine Corps PFT scores classified — 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Class?

Classification is based entirely on total score, not on per-event cutoffs, and the thresholds are identical across every age bracket and gender for both the PFT and the CFT:

Class

Total Score Range

1st Class

235–300

2nd Class

200–234

3rd Class

150–199

Failing

Below 150, or below 40 in any single event

Because these thresholds apply uniformly, there's no separate "1st Class pull-up number" or "2nd Class run time" — only a combined score target. As a rough planning guide, 1st Class works out to an average of about 78 points per event, 2nd Class to about 67, and 3rd Class to about 50 (these are approximate averages for pacing your training, not official per-event standards).

Class rank matters beyond bragging rights — it factors into promotion boards, and composite scores in the 275–300 range are commonly cited as competitive, though that figure isn't an official cutoff.

Worth noting: the women's pull-up minimum is weighted at 60 points rather than the standard 40-point floor applied to every other event, reflecting a different scoring curve for that event.

Plank standard (all Marines, any age or gender): A 3:45 hold earns the full 100 points; a 1:10 hold earns the 40-point minimum. Reference points along the way include 2:59 (82 points), 2:28 (70 points), 2:02 (60 points), and 1:36 (50 points).

Did the 2026 combat arms policy change Marine Corps PFT scoring?

Under MARADMIN 613/25, announced in December 2025 and effective January 1, 2026, Marines in combat arms primary military occupational specialties — including infantry riflemen, field artillery cannoneers, mortarmen, and Raiders — are now scored on the male, age-normed Marine Corps PFT table regardless of gender.

These Marines must score at least 210 points, or 70 percent of the maximum, on that male table. Those who pass the PFT overall but fall short of 210 by the end of the reporting period are routed into remedial physical training and may face restrictions on military occupational specialty reclassification or promotion. No adverse or punitive action applies while further guidance is developed.

Marines outside combat arms PMOSs continue testing on the standard gender- and age-normed tables shown above, with 150 points still the baseline to pass.

Are height/weight and body composition part of the PFT score?

No. Height, weight, and body composition are evaluated separately from Marine Corps PFT and CFT scores, even though all three affect a Marine's overall standing.

Under MARADMIN 066/26, released February 26, 2026 and effective January 1, 2026, the Marine Corps replaced its semiannual height and weight evaluation with a waist-to-height ratio check. Marines now measure waist circumference at the navel and divide it by height; a result of 0.52 or less meets standard. That's a tighter benchmark than the 0.55 ratio cited as a general Department of Defense screening figure. This check happens semiannually for both active duty and reserve components.

Marines whose waist-to-height ratio exceeds 0.52 move to a body fat evaluation using multi-site circumference tape measurement or bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Marines.mil indicates BIA will eventually replace the tape method entirely. The underlying body fat percentage standards themselves — which remain sex- and age-normed — did not change with this update; the Marine Corps directs readers to its full age/sex body fat tables on marines.mil rather than reproducing them here, since they're a separate standard from the ratio screening.

There's a performance-based exemption built in: Marines who score 285 or higher on both the PFT and CFT can carry up to 26 percent body fat (men) or 36 percent body fat (women). A smaller one-percentage-point allowance applies to Marines scoring 250 or higher on both tests, capped at those same ceilings. Marines above the applicable ceiling enter the Body Composition Program regardless of their fitness test scores. Anyone measured under the old height-and-weight method between January 1, 2026 and the MARADMIN's release must be re-evaluated under the new ratio standard.

An earlier Marine Corps study found the tape test correctly identified 91.6 percent of male Marines and 92 percent of female Marines who were over the allowable body fat threshold, which is part of why the service has leaned toward keeping tape and BIA as backup measures rather than dropping body composition screening altogether.

Where do official Marine Corps PFT scores come from?

Your official Marine Corps PFT and CFT scores of record live in MCTIMS and are confirmed through your command. Third-party calculators and reference tables — including this one — are useful for training and planning, but they're unofficial. Always verify current standards directly against fitness.marines.mil, since MARADMINs can update scoring tables, age brackets, or policy details between verification dates.

Build your training plan around the standard

Chasing a Marine Corps PFT score without knowing your bracket's exact thresholds is like training for a race without knowing the finish line. Pin down your age group and gender row in the tables above, figure out which class score you're targeting, and build your pull-up, push-up, plank, and run training around that specific number — not a rough estimate. If you're preparing for the Marine Corps CFT instead, the same logic applies: know your movement to contact, ammo lift, and maneuver under fire minimums before you start stacking workouts.

Whatever bracket you fall into, cross-check your numbers against fitness.marines.mil close to your test date, since body composition rules and combat arms scoring policy have both shifted within the past year.

Frequently asked questions

What's the minimum passing score on the Marine Corps PFT?
A Marine must score at least 150 total points and at least 40 points in each individual event (60 points for women's pull-ups) to pass the Marine Corps PFT. Falling below either threshold results in a failure, regardless of the total score.

How is the Marine Corps CFT different from the PFT?
The Marine Corps PFT tests pull-ups or push-ups, a plank hold, and a 3-mile run during the January–June window. The Marine Corps CFT tests movement to contact, ammunition can lifts, and maneuver under fire during the July–December window. Both use the same 300-point scale and the same 1st/2nd/3rd Class thresholds.

Do pull-ups or push-ups score higher on the Marine Corps PFT?
Pull-ups can earn a maximum of 100 points, while push-ups cap at 70 points. Choosing the push-up option limits a Marine's total possible PFT score to 270 points instead of 300.

Are Marine Corps PFT standards the same for every age group?
No. Rep counts and run times vary by eight age brackets, from 17–20 up through 51+, for both men and women. However, the plank standard and the 1st/2nd/3rd Class score thresholds stay the same across every age bracket and gender.

Does body fat percentage affect my Marine Corps PFT score?
No. Body composition, including the waist-to-height ratio check introduced under MARADMIN 066/26, is evaluated separately from PFT and CFT scoring. A high PFT or CFT score can unlock a higher allowable body fat ceiling, but it doesn't alter the fitness test score itself.

Who scores on the male PFT table regardless of gender?
Marines in designated combat arms primary military occupational specialties — such as infantry, field artillery, mortars, and Raider billets — are scored on the male, age-normed table under MARADMIN 613/25, effective January 1, 2026, and must reach at least 210 points.
