The California National Guard Medal of Merit is a symbol of distinguished service and dedication. It honors individuals whose work has strengthened the Guard and the State, inspiring others to strive toward the same high standards of excellence.
History
The California National Guard Medal of Merit (CAMM) is one of the oldest and most respected decorations of the State of California. Established to honor members of the California National Guard for distinguished service, the CAMM recognizes those whose actions and accomplishments have brought credit to the Guard and to the State. It is considered a high-level state award, often conferred for achievements and service above the normal expectations of duty.
Award Criteria
The Medal of Merit may be awarded for:
- Outstanding meritorious service or achievement that significantly contributes to the readiness, mission success, or reputation of the California National Guard.
- Exceptional leadership or performance in either combat-related or non-combat duties that clearly distinguishes the recipient from peers.
- Sustained excellence in service over a period of time, or a singular act of merit that has lasting positive effect for the organization or the State of California.
It is intended for personnel who demonstrate consistent, exemplary performance and whose contributions set a clear standard for others to follow. The CAMM is not awarded for routine service or end-of-tour recognition, but for truly noteworthy accomplishments.
Authority
The award of the California Medal of Merit requires approval from The Adjutant General of the California National Guard or a designated approving authority at state headquarters. Recommendations must be submitted through official channels with a detailed justification outlining the service or achievements being recognized.
How It Is Worn
The California National Guard Medal of Merit is worn in ribbon form on the uniform in accordance with California National Guard Regulation (CAGR) 600-8-22 (State Military Awards and Decorations).
- In the order of precedence, it is generally placed below the California Legion of Merit but above lower-tier state ribbons, following all U.S. federal awards and before any foreign decorations.
- Multiple awards of the CAMM are denoted by authorized devices such as bronze or silver oak leaf clusters, per state regulations.
- When the full-sized medal is worn, it is suspended from a ribbon drape as prescribed by state awards regulations.
