Merchant Marine Mariner's Medal (WW2) Lapel Pin
This lapel pin represents the Merchant Marine Mariner's Medal, established by an Act of Congress on May 10, 1943. Because the Merchant Marine was not considered a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, its members were not eligible for the Purple Heart — the Mariner's Medal was created to fill that gap, awarded to seamen who were killed or wounded as a direct result of conflict against an opposing armed force during World War II.
Designed by sculptor Paul Manship, the medal saw 6,635 awards during the war before further issuance was suspended in 1956. Subsequent awards are denoted by gold stars affixed to the ribbon.
