Q: Can I use a caluculator during the ASVAB?
A: No, the primary goal of the ASVAB is to assess not what you have learned, but what you can do. Knowledge of basic math and the ability to do hand calculations (without a calculator) may be required on the job, so it’s important that the ability to do math without a calculator is assessed on the ASVAB.

Q: What's the difference between the ASVAB and the AFQT?
A: The ASVAB has 10 tests. Your scores from four of the tests—Word Knowledge (WK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), and Mathematics Knowledge (MK)—are combined to compute your score on what is referred to as the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT). Scores on the AFQT are used to determine your eligibility for enlistment. Scores on all of the ASVAB tests are used to determine the best job for you in the military.

Q: How often can I take the ASVAB?
A: After you take your initial ASVAB, you must wait one calendar month to retake the test. You must wait an additional calendar month to retest a second time. After that, you must wait six calendar months to retake the ASVAB. Your scores may be used for enlistment for up to two years from the date of testing.

Q: What does my AFQT score mean?
A: AFQT scores are reported as percentiles between 1-99. An AFQT percentile score indicates the percentage of examinees in a reference group who scored at or below that particular score. For current AFQT scores, the reference group is a sample of 18 to 23 year old youth who took the ASVAB as part of a national norming study conducted in 1997. Thus, if you scored an AFQT score of 62 it indicates that you scored as well as or better than 62 percent of the nationally-representative sample of 18 to 23 year old youth.

Q: Can AFQT scores be waived if I don't score high enough?
A: Yes, but that's usually done if you are very close to the branch's minimum requirements. It is rare, highly conditional and never guaranteed to get score waivers. It's best to ask this question directly to your recruiter.

Jobs by Score Band

Curious what kinds of jobs are available according to a particular AFQT score range? Here's a sampling.

Army

Scoring in the 31–49 bracket generally opens up entry-level combat arms, general maintenance, logistics, and field support roles like infantry (11B), cavalry scout (19D), motor transport operator (88M), and food service specialist (92G). 

Scoring in the 50-64 range qualifies you for the vast majority of Army Military Occupational Specialties including combat medic specialist (68W), wheeled vehicle mechanic (91B), human resources specialist (42A), combat engineer (12B), and signal support systems specialist (25U), just to name a few. 

Scoring 65+ gives you full access to standard, technical, intelligence, and high-demand career fields, provided you meet specific line scores. Fields like intelligence analyst (35F),  cyber operations specialist (17C), unmanned aircraft systems operator (15W), and healthcare techs. 

Navy

Scoring in the 31–49 bracket meets the general Navy enlistment minimum if you have a high school diploma, giving you access to numerous operational, mechanical, administrative, and deck-force jobs including Aviation Ordnanceman (AO), Boatswain's Mate (BM), Culinary Specialist (CS), Hull Technician (HT), and Retail Services Specialist (RS).

Scoring in the 50-64 range qualifies you for the vast majority of enlisted Navy ratings (jobs), including many administrative, medical, aviation, and technical fields like Hospital Corpsman (HM), Aviation Boatswain's Mate (AB), Electronics Technician (ET) / Machinist's Mate (MM), and Logistics Specialist (LS).

Scoring 65+ qualifies you for virtually every enlisted job (rating) in the U.S. Navy, including high-tech, and nuclear fields like Nuclear Field (NF - Nuclear Operator/Engineer), Cryptologic Technician (CT - Networks, Collection, or Maintenance), Intelligence Specialist (IS), and Electronics Technician (ET) / Aviation Electronics Technician (AT).

Air Force

Scoring in the 31–49 bracket meets the minimum requirement to enlist in the U.S. Air Force with a high school diploma, but it limits your available jobs to mission support, administrative, and basic maintenance roles like Security Forces (Military Police), Services Specialist, Material Management / Logistics, Transportation and Fleet Management, and Certain Civil Engineering / Trades Roles.

Scoring in the 50-64 qualifies you to enlist and opens the door to a solid variety of technical, mechanical, medical support, and administrative Air Force jobs like aircraft maintenance, medical support, and aircrew flight equipment.

Scoring 65+ qualifies you for virtually every enlisted job in the U.S. Air Force, provided you also meet specific line score, medical, and background requirements. These roles include Cyber Operations, Intelligence & Analysis, Aviation & Flight Crew, High-Tech Maintenance & Electronics, and Medical Specialties.

Marine Corps

Scoring in the 31–49 bracket meets the minimum enlistment requirement for the U.S. Marine Corps with a high school diploma and opens opportunities in combat arms, basic logistics/supply, food service, and certain ground support or motor transport roles, provided your individual line scores meet that specific minimum for each MOS.

Scoring in the 50-64 range qualifies you for enlistment and opens up a wide selection of jobs including infantry and combat roles like Rifleman, Machine Gunner, and other ground combat roles, and Administration and Communication roles like clerks, legal support, and basic data systems roles.

Scoring 65+ puts you in the top tier of applicants, giving you broad access to specialized, highly technical, and competitive jobs like Intelligence (02xx / 26xx), Cyber Operations / Information Technology (17xx), Communications (06xx), and Aviation Electronics & Maintenance (6xxx).

Space Force

Scoring in the 31–49 bracket meets the minimum enlistment requirement for the U.S. Space Force but your job options are extremely limited because most Guardian careers require much higher technical line scores, but you are eligible for some intelligence and cyber roles.

Scoring in the 50-64 range qualifies you for enlistment and opens up a wide selection of jobs including Space Systems Operator, All Source Analyst, Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) / Cryptologic Analyst, and Cyber Operations Fields.

Scoring 65+ puts you in the top tier of applicants that easily clears the general enlistment threshold for the U.S. Space Force and qualifies you for its most specialized, highly technical jobs like Space Systems Operations Specialist, Cyber Systems Operations / Cyber Operations, and All-Source Intelligence Analyst. 

Coast Guard

Scoring in the 31–49 bracket meets the minimum enlistment requirement for most branches, but the U.S. Coast Guard requires at least a 32 AFQT. If you achieve a score that gains you entry, jobs in this range include Boatswain's Mate (BM), Maritime Enforcement Specialist (ME), Culinary Specialist (CS) and Administrative & Logistics Roles.

Scoring in the 50-64 range qualifies you for enlistment and opens up a wide selection of jobs including Boatswain's Mate (BM), Maritime Enforcement Specialist (ME), Culinary Specialist (CS), Storekeeper (SK), Yeoman (YN), Damage Controlman (DC), and Diver (DV), to name a few. 

Scoring 65+ puts you in the top tier of applicants that easily clears the general enlistment threshold for the U.S. Coast Guard and qualifies you for nearly all USCG jobs including Avionics Electrical Technician (AET), Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT), Cyber Mission Specialist (CMS), Information Systems Technician (IT), and Intelligence Specialist (IS).
