US Army 296th Infantry Regiment Unit Crest (Alerta Esta or Alert It Is)

The 296th Infantry Regiment, part of the Puerto Rico Army National Guard, originally consisted of Puerto Rican soldiers and officers. Today, only its 1st Battalion is active, serving under the 92nd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade. The regiment has a history of being the first Puerto Rico National Guard unit to engage in combat, with roots dating back to May 17, 1762, as part of Spain's Disciplined Militias. After being reduced in 1870 and disbanded in 1898 following Puerto Rico's cession to the United States, it has most recently been deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2002 and attached to the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment during the Iraq War.
