The ARMS was created in 1964 as the "Air Force Reserve Ribbon", then in 1971 the decoration evolved into a full sized medal with its current name. Between the years of 1965 and 1974 this awards was granted to personnel with four years of distinguished reserve service, then in 1975 the time limit was lowered to three years.
