Description

Coast Guard Arctic Service Medal Lapel Pin

This lapel pin represents the Coast Guard Arctic Service Medal, established on May 20, 1976, by Commandant Admiral Owen W. Siler. It is awarded to members of the U.S. Coast Guard who complete 21 days of duty, consecutive or cumulative, north of the Arctic Circle, with qualifying service retroactive to January 1, 1946. Air crews flying in and out of Arctic regions may also qualify after 21 flight days.

The full medal's design, created by Arnold P. Simmons of the Army's Institute of Heraldry, features a polar bear beneath the North Star — the bear representing the Arctic region and a nod to the historic Coast Guard Cutter Bear, while the star evokes Stella Polaris, prominent in the northern sky. The ribbon is the color reverse of the Antarctica Service Medal, marking service at the opposite pole.

Sized for everyday wear, this pin lets veterans display this recognition on a suit lapel or jacket. It's built for accurate detail and lasting durability.
