"Each Halloween I gear up to celebrate in an outfit from the past. A few years ago I went to a party in an authentic US Army Vietnam era uniform; canvas & leather jungle boots, slash pocket shirt, web belt with brass buckle. As I was about 10 years older than my neighbors, no one could ID my garb. This year my outfit was even more obscure: An OSS Officer assigned to the JEDBURGH Operation. For shoulder patches I had and American Flag on the left and a SOCOM patch on the right. SOCOM apparently adopted the gold sword as they have a direct lineage to the OSS. While in the Army I met a JEDBURGH officer who described his mission of parachuting into occupied France in 1944 to lead his small team to harass the Germans. He said that the Flag patch gave him some assurance that if captured he'd have some claim that he was a combatant and not a spy. In addition his presence gave notice to the French that the US was beginning their major liberation effort. His was a long story but upon reflection he regarded his primary contribution was to rally the French resistance to aid the massive post D-Day operation."
